The Songs of 2019

I’ve been quite reflective over the past year… and it’s not the type of reflection that has taken me away from the present but rather, one that has helped me feel more settled with life as is. Throughout this process, I used music as a means to both escape and enjoy. It’s a dichotomy of sorts I suppose, that I not only grew very comfortable with but also empowered by as the year progressed. Finding this peace both internally and externally required moments of solitude and rest. But in welcoming these moments, I was able to fully appreciate the present and create some of the most vibrant memories.

I’m grateful for this life and all the people in it. Here are just a few of the experiences that made 2019 one of the best:

  • Riding down the bike path on my way to work this summer while listening to “Perth” by Bon Iver.

  • Enjoying a sunny afternoon on the porch with my housemates listening to “Slow Burn” by Kacey Musgraves or “Gone” by Charli XCX.

  • Waking up Chandler, Drew, and Lizzie with “Tia Tamera” by Doja Cat and Rico Nasty every morning in India.

  • Preparing to stomp our feet in the Bunker basement as Helena queued “Wait so Long” by Trampled by Turtles.

  • Dancing the night away in the Mezzanine of Memorial Hall during the Tierra Whack concert.

  • And seeing my friend, Nicholas Byrne, put together one of the most insane audiovisual experiences in Cats Cradle for Office Hours.

It was an immense pleasure to enjoy this music, make it my own, and grow as a result of it throughout the year. I’m looking forward to all the adventures and fun 2020 has in store. I know that my close friends and I are already planning some big things!

So here’s “my 2019” – a collection of songs that mean a whole lot to me, the year would not have been the same without them.
